As the song from Don McLean goes, “A long, long time ago,” my grandmother saw my interest in her crocheting. She patiently taught me the basic stitches to crochet dish cloths for my mother, my aunts, and my grandparents—whoever would take them. Most of them would, as they loved me and didn’t want to hurt my feelings. As I gained more experience in crocheting, she taught me more and more stitches. I loved it! It felt so great to take a strand of yarn and create something beautiful. As I got older (and remember, this was “A long, long time ago”), I had to take a home education class in school and took up sewing. My teacher saw promise in me, and I actually convinced my parents to buy me my first sewing machine. I earned a 1st place ribbon in the annual FHA in my local county.
As time went on and I had children (a beautiful boy and girl), I handmade their clothes, Halloween costumes, and anything else they needed. They were always the best-dressed kids, with no designer labels or overpriced clothing. It just didn’t make sense at the time when I knew they would grow out of them so quickly.
Time went on, and there was a hiatus where I was just too busy to pursue my passion again. Then I slowed down and realized I wanted to create handmade crafts once more. So, I started back up. My first project was a pocket shawl, which was very well received and still sells well today. I am learning more intricate stitches, and now I am putting out some very beautiful garments and handmade items. Check them out on my website or at www.facebook.com/rgscustomcreations. Through RG Custom, I make garments and projects tailor-made for you. You can customize the color, material, and size to suit your needs. Everything I create is made by hand—no machines involved—and I want to maintain that integrity in my product.
Thank you for letting me share my passion with you, and I hope you enjoy my handmade projects for many years to come.
